The Barbaric Clans of Kethira
The Free Clans are independent peoples who owe allegiance to their own traditions rather than the Crown of Kethira. There are four clans who homestead in Kethira.
Structure
Unlike the Houses:
- leadership is earned
- inheritance is less important
- warriors and elders share authority
- clan councils are common
A clan chief who loses respect may simply be replaced.
This often horrifies nobles.
The Great Clan Confederacies
Several major clan groupings exist.
These are large enough to influence politics across Kethira.
The Stormhorn Confederacy
Located in the northern coastal highlands.
Known for:
- sailors
- raiders
- monster hunters
These are the people most likely to interact with Karshana.
Their longships occasionally patrol the Sea of Erone.
Distinctive Color: Deep Blue
Symbol: A lightning bolt splitting a wave
Tattoo Style: Interwoven spirals and lightning patterns
Placement:
- Forearms
- Neck
- Face (senior warriors)
The Stormhorns believe every person carries a storm within them.
Their tattoos mimic:
- ocean currents
- storm clouds
- lightning strikes
Veteran warriors often have blue pigment mixed with silver dust.
At sea, their tattoos almost appear to glow.
Recognition
The more tattoos a warrior possesses, the more voyages they have survived.
A completely tattooed Stormhorn captain is considered nearly legendary.
The Ironroot Clans
Located throughout the Thurdona Mountains.
Known for:
- giant hunting
- mining
- goat herding
- survival skills
House Stonemantle maintains a cautious friendship with them.
Distinctive Color: Dark Green
Symbol: Mountain roots wrapped around stone
Tattoo Style: Angular knotwork resembling roots and cracks in rock
Placement:
- Shoulders
- Chest
- Upper arms
The Ironroots believe strength comes from connection to the mountain.
Each tattoo represents:
- a hunt
- a victory
- an oath
Their markings often resemble:
Trees growing through stone.
Special Tradition
The clan chief receives a tattoo that runs from neck to ankle.
No two are alike.
The Ashwalker Clans
Live near Mount Kharos and other volcanic regions.
They are viewed as strange by outsiders.
Many claim descent from survivors of ancient catastrophes.
Some possess oral histories older than any written record.
Distinctive Color: Red-Orange
Symbol: A black volcano surrounded by flames
Tattoo Style: Jagged lines resembling flowing lava
Placement:
- Face
- Hands
- Scalp
Among the Ashwalkers, tattoos are intentionally painful.
Pain is viewed as sacred.
Each tattoo commemorates surviving:
- fire
- hardship
- loss
Many warriors shave portions of their heads to display the markings.
Special Tradition
Ashwalker shamans mix volcanic ash into the ink.
The resulting tattoos appear almost black.
The Gray Coast Clans
Perhaps the most feared.
These clans have survived living in the Land of Null for generations.
They understand:
- undead
- curses
- haunted places
better than most scholars.
Many nobles consider them superstitious.
Many scholars secretly consult them.
Color: Gray and White
Symbol: A raven above a skull-shaped wave
Tattoo Style: Thin geometric lines resembling bones
Placement:
- Hands
- Fingers
- Around the eyes
The Gray Coast people live nearest the Deadlands.
Their tattoos often represent:
- ancestors
- spirits
- family lines
Many outsiders find them unsettling.
That suits the Gray Coast just fine.
Special Tradition
Every adult receives a small facial tattoo representing a deceased ancestor.
A Gray Coast warrior literally carries their family history on their skin.
Their Relationship to the Crown
The Free Clans are not subjects in the same way as the Great Houses.
The relationship is closer to a treaty.
King Zerne's mother, Queen Zauriel, negotiated several agreements that still hold today.
The clans provide:
- scouts
- guides
- warriors
The Crown recognizes:
- hunting grounds
- sacred sites
- clan autonomy
This arrangement has prevented several civil wars.
Why They Matter
The Great Houses represent civilization.
The Free Clans represent memory.
Many clan traditions are oral rather than written.
Which means they remember things that libraries have forgotten.
Clan Status Markers
Unlike nobles who display rank through titles, clan members display status visually.
Braids
Length and complexity indicate achievements.
A warrior's braid can tell an entire life story.
Beads
Different materials signify accomplishments.
Examples:
- Bone = monster slain
- Iron = military service
- Silver = clan leadership
- Amber = spiritual significance
Scars
Many clans intentionally leave ceremonial scars.
Scars are not hidden.
They are displayed proudly.
What Nobles Think
House Lander respects the clans.
House Chalise studies them.
House Voss occasionally exploits them.
House Carellian dismisses them.
House Aurelian recognizes them because Queen Zauriel insisted upon it.
A Shared Mark
All Free Clans possess one symbol in common:
A small circle broken by four lines.
Usually tattooed somewhere hidden.
Behind an ear.
On a wrist.
Near the collarbone.
It predates all four clan confederacies.
Most warriors assume it is simply an ancient tradition.
The symbol is older than Kethira.
Older than the Great Houses.
Older than the Land of Null.
It is one of the last surviving symbols of the First Compact.
It is an oath that each adult barbarian takes that swears they will defend their lands against any great threat, regardless of whomever claims the throne.
When scholars seek answers about:
- the First Compact
- the Fourfold End
- ancient dragons
- forgotten gods
they often discover that some old clan storyteller already knows the tale.
The story may be distorted.
But it survives.
