Throughout the land, there are several institutions of learning for those who seek knowledge, learn a trade, or build a class. They are:  

The Serpent's Guild

Headquarters:
Officially none.

Unofficially:
Nobody knows.

Symbol:
A silver serpent coiled around a dagger.

Motto:

"Every Lock Has a Key."


Public Reputation

Most citizens believe the Serpent's Guild is merely a criminal organization.

This is only partially true.

The guild acts as:

  • thieves' guild
  • assassin network
  • intelligence service
  • smuggling operation
  • information brokerage

Guild leadership.

The Serpent

Unknown guildmaster.

No one knows if this title belongs to a single individual or a council.


Relationship with Acroyear

Acroyear refuses membership.

This drives the guild insane.

Many members view him as:

"The greatest thief who never joined."

Some admire him.

Some hate him.


Relationship with House Voss

Helena Voss frequently employs guild members.

The guild insists they are independent.

Nobody believes them.


The Iron Brotherhood

Headquarters:

The Citadel of Steel, Morgansfort

Symbol:
A sword superimposed over a shield.

Motto:

"Strength Serves."


Purpose

The Brotherhood exists to train warriors.

Unlike noble armies, they accept:

  • commoners
  • foreigners
  • former criminals
  • adventurers

If you can fight, you can join.

Relationship with House Lander

The Brotherhood and House Lander maintain a close alliance.

Many Landers become Marshals.

Many Marshals marry into House Lander.


Relationship with King Zerne

The Crown officially recognizes the Brotherhood.

In wartime, its members often serve as auxiliary officers.

Scholar's Hill


Located on elevated ground overlooking much of Barrow's Edge.

The area contains:

  • The University of Barrow's Edge
  • Temple of the Seven Lights
  • Libraries
  • Archives
  • Student housing
  • Scriptoriums
  • Public lecture halls

Normally it is one of the city's most peaceful neighborhoods.  Not anymore.
