Known Monsters of Kethira

Introduction:

Kethira is also home to many threats, all with their own backstories. Kethira is home to dragons of red, green, black, and gold are sighted often, flying over cities and towns as they travel to and from their lairs. A family of red dragons, led by the venerable Vorthyx the Red, reside on a high peak in the Thurdona Mountains. A family of black dragons reside in the ruins of the old cathedral in the north country, led by the ancient Morghul the Black. Sylvara the Green is known as the “Judge of the Forests”. Green dragon sightings are the most common, and their activities do not infringe upon human settlements…for now. The one enigma is Aurion the Golden, an ancient gold dragon who maintains a museum in his lair which tells the history of Kethira. He had been watching over Morgansfort like a reclusive guardian, but no one has seen him for over a year. Each dragon rules over their territory like a kingdom.

Recently, a wandering blue dragon has returned to Barrow's Edge, and began starting trouble. He also has a story.

In addition, tribes of giants live in the mountains. The people of Barrow’s Edge share accounts of raids by frost giants during the winter months. Stories abound of Storm giants living on the high peaks, Fire giants residing in the now stable remains of volcanoes, and, as rumor only, a family of Cloud Giants whom very few have ever seen.

The Dragons:

Vorthyx the Red

The one who gets all the scary stories. He's the one that parents warn their children about. He is the venerable Vorthyx the Red, and his clan resides on a high peak in the Thurdona Mountains on the most southern edge of the kingdom. The latest account states he has five younger associates.

A tyrant dwelling in volcanic peaks.

Wants:

  • Tribute
  • Slaves
  • Fear

Believes:

Humanity has become arrogant and must be broken.

Morghul the Black

A family of black dragons reside in the ruins of an old cathedral in the north country near Slateholm. They are led by the ancient Morghul the Black. His clan dwells in drowned ruins north of Kethira, and has a guild of devoted warriors at his bidding.

Collects:

  • Forbidden lore
  • Ancient artifacts
  • Necromantic secrets

Believes:

Humanity is ripe for conquest, once the opportunity presents itself.

Sylvara the Green

Sylvara the Green is a venerable dragon known as the “Judge of the Forests”. Resides in the dense forests near Barrow's Edge. An excellent resource for information about the Land of Null, if you approach her properly. Green dragon sightings are the most common, and their activities do not infringe upon human settlements…for now.

Uses:

  • Manipulation
  • Charm
  • Espionage

Believes:

Humanity are pawns in her game.

Aurion the Gold

An ancient recluse who protects Helmfirth. Lives alone.

Believes:

A greater catastrophe approaches. Desires to unite humanity and giantkind against a cataclysmic threat, but doesn't exactly know what the cataclysm is.

Kordon the All-Knowing

Though increasingly he struggles to remember why. He also complains that he's cold. He is the oldest living dragon on the continent.

Older than:

  • The Carelian dynasty
  • the kingdom of Kethira
  • most of the noble houses

Believes:

He can cure his affliction by divulging this information. He believes he was cursed and has been blackmailed by a powerful wizard. At this time, he cannot remember the wizard's name.

Motivations:

He remembers stories from before Kethira, when these were wild and untamed lands. He knows all of Kethira's most closely guarded secrets, but he's fighting a losing battle with an affliction called The Crumbling, which afflicts dragons like senility affects people.

Kordon has taken up residence in Stormwatch Keep, the castle that belongs to Medeira Valewind, the longtime proprietor of The Gilded Sigil, a magic shop of renown in the Bazaar at Barrow's Edge.

Kordon knows he is losing his mind. That terrifies him.

Imagine possessing:

  • ten centuries of memories
  • knowledge of kingdoms long vanished
  • forgotten languages
  • ancient secrets

And watching them disappear one by one. He spends much of his time desperately recording information. Entire chambers of Stormwatch Keep are covered with:

  • notes
  • maps
  • sketches
  • names

Attempts to preserve himself. Everyone assumes Vorthax came for conquest. The truth is much sadder. He came because he forgot where he was supposed to go.

The Giants:

Tribes of giants live in the mountains. The people of Barrow’s Edge share accounts of raids by frost giants during the winter months. Stories abound of Storm giants living on the high peaks, Fire giants residing in the now stable remains of volcanoes, and, as rumor only, a family of Cloud Giants whom very few have ever seen.
